Obituary of Cornelius Leroy Hulstein

Cornelius “Corky” Leroy Hulstein, 81, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday October 7, 2018 at Fairhaven Senior Living.

Corky was born in Hull, Iowa on March 5, 1937 to Gerrit and Hilda (Kuipers) Hulstein.

On June 1, 1960 Corky marries Anna Sewczenko in Borlagin, Germany and they had one daughter together.  Anna passed away in 2000. On October 2, 2004 Corky married Elaine (Stephenson) Fjelstad and together they have four children.

After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army in Milwaukee on April 3, 1958 and served most of his time in Germany.  From 1961 until 1964, Corky was enlisted in the Army Reserves.  For seventeen years, Corky worked as a foreman and laborer at James Foundry.   Corky later owned his own handy man business and delivered mail for the U. S. Postal Service in Fort Atkinson for 19 years. 

Corky enjoyed cooking and volunteering for organizations like Countryside (now Alden Estates), the Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gerrit and Hilda (Kuipers) Hulstein; first wife, Anna; brothers, Marvin, Richard, Larry and Gerrit.

Corky is survived by his wife, Elaine; children, Toni (Ron) Rice of Tacoma, Washington, Karri (Robert) Heinz of Kaukauna, Dana (Tina) Fjelstad of Stoughton, Heather (Thomas) Fjelstad-Bunce of Fort Atkinson; grandchildren, Maygan Thomas, Jesse Heinz, Jake Dorn,  Chloe Fjelstad, Sophie Fjelstad, Donovan Fjelstad, Nathan Fjelstad, Ryan Fjelstad, Benjamin Gilfus; great grandchildren, Devan and Jaxon Smith, brothers, Ed Hulstein of Jefferson, Gerrit  “Bill” (Becky) Hulstein of Fort Atkinson;  sister-in-law’s, Phyllis Hulstein of Fort Atkinson, Betty Hulstein of Fort Atkinson, Sandra (Phil) Wall of Lake Mills.

Funeral services will take place at 11 A.M. on Wednesday October 17, 2018 at Grace United Church, 1635 Janesville Ave, Fort Atkinson, WI 53538.  Visitation will take place from 10 A.M. until time of the service.  Burial will follow the services at Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Atkinson.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Corky’s honor to Grace United Church.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Fairhaven Senior Living for their care of Corky and to the Nitardy Funeral Home for their assistance with the services.
