Roger let me spend some time helping on his farm for a few summers. I enjoyed it very much.

Dear Roger!
This will be my last letter to you.
Even if you now have already walked into the light, I can feel you here, right beside me as I am writing.
I am not the person to pay you a proper tribute, I’ll leave that to those who know you so much better.
But I have also had the privilege of spending a year of my youth in your family, being accepted and cared for by you and Shirley, and your family, an experience that now, after more than fourty years, still lingers on in form of good memories and lifelong friendships.
That one year and the experiences I had then brings me to mind two things that stands out when thinking of you back then.
The first is BEING STURDY.
You gave the term sturdyness a human face, in all its aspects.
For being strong, in heart, mind and will.
For being stubbornly, unrelentlessly geared towards the goals you had set up.
When you had set your mind on something, you saw it through.
The second is BEING LOVED.
Come to think about it, I have not met many people in my life that have been so loved as you were.
By Shirley;
for her, you were the center of her life, around who she revolved like the earth does the sun. My impression was that it wasn’t a waking moment of Shirleys day that she didn’t work towards or catered for your aid and/or well-being.
By all of your daughters;
all of them in their own way, always doing their utmost, to the best of each one’s capacity, to show you how much they loved, cared for and respected you.
By many others, no one mentioned no one forgotten, who also cared deeply for you.
And so did I.
Last af all I want to relay one of the last things my own father said, answering my question if he was scared of dying:
”No, my dearest, this will be the last, but greatest adventure of my life!”
I wish you, dear Roger, my American ”father”, the best adventure of your life, and good times together with Shirley and so many others on the other side!
With love,
Hedvig
from Sweden.

I remember the time Roger asked me if I would custom plant no-till soybeans for him. I still consider it a privilege to this day to do it but I dad the opportunity to meet two of the most honest and decent people. After I got done planting I stayed for lunch and dessert after invitation. Never forgot that! Salt of the Earth people to say the least. God Bless them both!

My sympathy to the Lehmann family. I was just a Four H kid in the swine project when I first met him. It was his dedication to his farm and family that left a great impression on me. His dedication to the swine project and each of the members has stayed with me through my entire life. For that I am sincerely grateful!
